QUEEN OF THE SUN:
What Are the Bees Telling Us?

This is a profound, alternative look at the global bee crisis from award-winning filmmaker Taggart Siegel, director of REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN . Taking us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world including Michael Pollan, Gunther Hauk and Vandana Shiva. Together they reveal both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.

Our May Program Is
Ocean Frontiers
An Award Winning Film

Wednesday, May 13, 7 PM at the
P.G. Museum of Natural History
Central & Forest Avenues, Pacific Grove

How do we meet our ever-expanding demands on the ocean, without destroying it? The answer is explored in the video Ocean Frontiers. This award-winning film portrays inspiring stories of citizens coming together for the sake of their sea.

"Ocean Frontiers: The Dawn of a New Era in Ocean Stewardship takes us on an inspiring voyage to seaports and watersheds across the country -- from the busy shipping lanes of Boston Harbor to a small fishing community in the Pacific Northwest; from America's coral reefs in the Florida Keys to the nation's premier seafood nursery in the Mississippi Delta. Here we meet an intermingling of unlikely allies, of industrial shippers and whale biologists, pig farmers and wetland ecologists, sport fishers and reef snorkelers and many more, all of them embarking on a new course of cooperation, to sustain the sea and our ocean economies."

Green Living Tour
Sunday, September 27, 11 am to 4 pm

Come to the PG Museum of Natural History to sign in, enter the drawing for prizes,
and pick up a map for the free self-guided tour.

Start your tour with the Museum's native, drought-tolerant garden.

Bee Houses at the Museum.

This year, our tour includes, besides the Museum's garden, 6 local homes & gardens to highlight work in progress by people interested in a more sustainable lifestyle. Our goal is to live in a way that conserves precious resources. We capture sunlight for energy and water for thirsty soil. We enjoy growing plants and keeping animals in harmony with nature -- enjoying the bounty of our own efforts.

Many people want to live in a more sustainable way, but may not know where to begin. We welcome you, and also want to meet and learn from others already engaged in various versions of sustainable living. The diverse projects you will see on the tour are based on the 3-Rs of sustainability -- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle -- plus any number more: Refuse, Repair, Recover, Rescue, Reclaim. We might say, too, Rejoice! because sustainability adds creativity, beauty, and fun to the neighborhood while building a sense of community.

To the extent we have any great expertise, it has been from trying things, asking questions, and sharing with others. Come share with us, meet your neighbors, and get inspired!

Sustainable Pacific Grove is a group of residents in the City of Pacific Grove, CA. We are one of 9 action groups, part of Communities for Sustainable Monterey County.

        1. FREE - sign up at the Museum, pick up your map.
        2. Take the self-guided tour of homes & gardens. Meet neighbors and get inspired!
        3. Go home and put your new ideas to work for you!

A drawing for prizes, local goods & services, will be held at sign up. SPG greatly appreciates donations to the drawing from the following businesses and agencies:

PG's Changing Shoreline: how will we adapt?

Sustainable Pacific Grove
Wednesday, November 11, 7 pm to 8:30 pm

In November, as we face winter weather, we examine the prospect of sea-level rise and the likelihood of increasingly severe storms. Is our beautiful coast ready? Is our infrastructure at risk?

Our updated Land Use Plan and Local Coastal Program must address these urgent questions.

Prof. Gary Griggs (geologist, UCSC) will share his expertise of many years on coastal erosion and other dynamics of our shores. A panel of other experts will make for a lively discussion, with time for Q&A.
