Our Mission: To make Carmel Valley a model of sustainability and preparedness through innovative, active, local solutions that enhance community. Where 'Sustainability' means “meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.” (UN Conference, 1987) |

Sustainable Carmel Valley has about 150 members, working independently or in neighborhood groups and gathering occasionally for mutual support under the umbrella of Communities for Sustainable Monterey County. We actively support our partner groups in Marina, Seaside, Salinas, Pacific Grove, Monterey, Carmel, and Big Sur.
We are actively involved in the issues of water supply and water quality. We work with allied groups to protect the Carmel River and to arrive at better solutions to our current problems. We have also worked on regulations regarding agricultural run-off of pesticides and fertilizer that pollute the drinking water of Monterey County residents.
We are cooperating with Sudden Oak Death (SOD) scientists from UC Davis to learn about SOD and what we can do to save our oaks. We have had informational meetings and a SOD Blitz where we identified and collected symptomatic plant material to learn where SOD is and is not found. We are awaiting the results of our research.
We support a ban on single use plastic bags and are gathering petition signatures. Our members support a proposed moratorium on genetically modified organisms or foods (GMO’s), and we support Daniella Russo’s international Plastic Pollution Coalition.
We support Fort Ord Rec Users (forU) and their effort to preserve the former Fort Ord as a regional resource and to prevent the destruction of 4,400 oaks for a transit facility.
Sustainable Carmel Valley co-sponsors with the Carmel Valley Fire District and Carmel Valley Association, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT). The program teaches preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, and light search and rescue. Three graduating classes have completed the training.
We recently hosted a Water and Wastewater Management Tour of Carmel Valley homes with innovative systems. We are planning a local honey tasting at Rosie’s and a bee and lavender tour at Carmel Valley Ranch.
