ABOUT SPG in 2009

Return to 'About SPG'

SPG continues to work at finding more ways for Pacific Grove to transition, thus becoming more green and sustainable.

What we have done in 2009

1. Table at PG Farmers' Market, many Monday afternoons.

2. Garden Time -
On Saturday January 17, the crew gathered at the Green Spot (Forest and Pine) for fun and fellowship while we cleaned up the garden. Snack and happy hour followed.

3. "Addicted to Plastics"-
SPG co-sponsored a showing of the film "Addicted to Plastics" on Thursday March 26 at MIIS.

4. Table in California State Parks' Earth Day - festival at the Custom House Plaza in Monterey, Sunday April 26.

5. Good Old Days, 2009
During Pacific Grove's Good Old Days, Saturday-Sunday April 4-5, SPG hosted an environmental fair at the Green Spot, promoted Alternative Transportation in the Parade, and also had a table on Lighthouse. Participants in the fair included The Offset Project, Trees for PG, Tomorrow Matters, Surfrider Monterey, Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District, Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, Monterey Regional Waste Management District, Applied Solar Energy, Edmonds Construction, Being Water, and Passion Purveyors.

6. Sustainable Pacific joining with Monterey Green Action (MGA) Fourth Thursday Film Caf brought a quality thought-provoking film and speakers, on Thursday, October 22nd at 6:00 p.m. The public was invited to this Special Event screening of "THE END OF THE LINE" followed by a panel discussion on fisheries issues with local experts in science, policy, commercial fisheries, and seafood entrepreneurship. The End of the Line, the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009.

For 2009, SPG offers these small measures for each of us to keep in mind:

Growing gardens, keeping chickens, composting, putting up clothes-lines.
Installing cisterns and tanks for rainwater.
Going to farmers' market, walking or using a bike to get around town.
Reduce, re-use, re-cycle.
Engage with your neighbors and your government (City Council, commissions, town meetings).
Form habits of practical sustainability and resilience.
Share what you discover. Continue exploring.
