CSMC “Know Your Neighborhood Watershed” Big Idea for 2017

Communities for Sustainable Monterey County is honored to have been selected by the Community Foundation and the Monterey County Weekly to participate in the annual “Monterey County GIVES!” campaign.

Our “Big Idea” for 2017  is “Knowing your Neighborhood Watershed”, focusing on the Gabilan Watershed within the City of Salinas.   The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the 9 sub-watersheds that lie within the Gabilan Watershed.  Through signage projects and stewardship experiences, youth participants will gain community service experience and earn recognition for their efforts.

PROJECT GOALS:

  • Creation of signage naming the 9 urban watersheds in Salinas
  • Creation of signage naming the 9 creeks and lakes into which the watersheds drain
  • Implementation of community-based projects, including native plant installations and/or trash clean-ups in each of the 9 watersheds

BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT:

  • Increased awareness by Salinas residents as they familiarize themselves with their neighborhood watershed
  • Strengthened community, as residents gather together to participate in events that benefit their neighborhood watershed
  • Residents learn how their actions can make a difference in protecting and maintaining the health of watersheds

 PROJECT DELIVERABLES:

  • 2 unique watershed signs delineating the boundary of each neighborhood watershed.
  • 2 creek or lake signs naming the associated creek or lake into which each watersheds drains.
  • A community-based project facilitated by Return of the Natives.
  • Recognition for youth who participate in 6 neighborhood activities related to watershed education and awareness.
